US, North Korea talks called off

Article Link

The Trump Administration was planning informal talks with the North Korean delegation the week of February 27th. These under the radar talks were to be held in New York, American Experts and the 6 man team from North Korea were supposed to attend. Up until Friday the 24th this was the plan, but news was sent to North Korean officials that their visas had not been granted and that the talks were to be called off. The withdrawal of the visas came shortly after the Malaysian Government announced that they had successfully assassinated Kim-Jong Nam, Kim-Jong Un's half brother. They used a nerve agent to kill him, one that the United Nations classifies as 'a weapon of mass destruction.'

While it seemed that America was looking to calm the relations between North Korea, this event could potentially cause even more tension between the two countries.

1. How do you think the last minute withdrawals of the visa's make us look as a country?
2. With the visas being denied right after the death of Kim-Jong Un's brother, do you think fingers of blame will be pointed in America's direction?
3. Being that Malaysia used a classified weapon of mass destruction, should that raise eyebrows not only here, but around the globe as well?

  1. Frankly I think it makes sense that the talks were cancelled. Clearly North Korea's actions are out of hand, and this whole VX Nerve assassination thing is just more proof of that. I'm pretty sure the use of a weapon of mass destruction is illegal under international law. I'm glad to see the Trump administration doing something sensible for once- we definitely cannot be trying to make friends with a country as irrational and dangerous as North Korea; alliance will only embolden their ridiculousness. Just as clarification it wasn't the Malaysian government that assassinated Kim Jong Nam- The North Koreans are accused of sending people to Malaysia to kill him.

  2. I think that the withdrawals could have made our country look indecisive and like the government if really confused and unsure what they want right now. I think it is not a good idea to be making alliances with North Korea, the under the table talks make Trump's administrative look really sneaky too.

  4. I do not believe that even planning such meetings were a good idea in the first place. They shouldn't have been kept "secret" especially with a country like North Korea. The withdrawal also makes the US look partly responsible for Kim Jong Un's brother's assassination.

  5. I strongly believe that the withdrawal causes for the US to look somewhat responsible for Kim Jon Un's brother assassination. Trump's administration causes for one to view them as very sneaky.

  6. I believe that these withdrawals make the US Government seem like they don't know what they're doing. I agree with Miguel, they shouldn't have kept them secret either it makes them look responsible for the assassination of Kim's brother.

  7. I believe that last minute withdrawals display that the US either does not want to calm any correlations with Korea, or that they don't even trust North Korea at all. The negotiations should not have been a plan at all for how can we expect to come to a consensus when North Korea hasn't been united with South Korea.

  8. The last minute withdrawals because of the visas shows that we do not trust them even though we are trying to come into agreement with them and I do not think that people are looking at America for the death of his step-brother. Yes it should raise eyebrows as it can affect the whole world if used against the world

  9. It makes us look like we are not open to the rest of the world. We are becoming secluded in the world with these new rules. They probably will because we tend to get ourselves involved with a lot of bad situations. We should keep ourselves away from malaysia.

  10. I think the last minute withdraw makes the country look weak within the country because we cannot make a decision. In addition, it seems as if we do not want calm relations with North Korea.

  11. Trying to create an alliance or talk with a groundless and unreasonable country like North Korea is not a good idea in my opinion. However, withdrawing the meeting makes us look suspicious.

  12. The last minute withdrawal was not a very good statement for us as a country. In addition, this last minute withdrawal makes us seem a bit responsible for Kim Jong Un's brother's assassination.

  13. So Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump wants to be friends sounds like a good idea! Sike? Honestly our withdrawal from this gathering is probably not even noticable because N. Korea does not have a high priority in the eyes of Russia or China per se. I bet right now some kid in N. Korea taking economics with a guy named Fon Jelder is watching a video showing how Obama was a assassin sent to kill Kim's brother, and that's why we need to trade in the food rations to build the bombs and Note 7s to go boom boom. If the statue of Fidel Castro fell down in Antarctica does it make a sound? This is analogous to Malaysia trying to "raise awareness" on weapons of mass destruction look what Bush did last time thaat happened.

  14. I do not believe that the US withdrawing makes the US seems suspicious but also isolated. It is saying in a way that the US is going to to do their own thing and focus on ourselves rather than trying to make alliance and peace with other countries.

  15. I think withdrawing visa's for north korean officials was a good idea. I dont think it made us look bad and it although it will increase tension North Korea has to realize that they have no choice but to compromise.

  16. I also agree that the last minute withdrawal of US visas does not give a good message towards the US. It shows that we are not open to the outside, which is never good when one is trying to make relations in our world.

  17. The US withdrawing was not a good idea since it makes us look bad after the assassination. It gives us a bad rep and makes us stand out from other countries

  18. I agree with Hannah that the withdrawal causes people to point fingers in our direction and may blame us for the death of Kim-Jong Nam. I also don't think that talking and making deals with North Korea is a good idea and may cause questions for the Trump administration.

  19. The US action of withdrawing visas will make the US appear indecisive. This is not necessarily bad because it shows that they are being cautious, but may still make the US appear negatively in the eyes of other countries.

  20. The US withdrawing visas wouldn't make the US seem indecisive because the current situation brings up lots of tension between the different countries, so it would be understandable. North Korea is dangerous and highly unpredictable, so I think it was a good decision for Trump's administration to pull back from potentially making an alliance or communicating with them. I do not think this would cause fingers to be pointed at the US though.

  21. I think the decision to withdraw the visas may seem as though the US as indecisive causing more tension to occur between the two countries. This event could potentially harm the relationships of the countries be unbalanced.

  22. I think that the withdrawal of the visas are making us look like we are picky about who we want in this country. Fingers might be pointed towards our direction, because we pulled the visas right after the death of Kim Jong Uns brother. I definitely think that the people on earth should be aware of weapons of mass destruction being used.

  23. I feel like withdrawing the visas may cause unneeded tension between the two countries.

  24. North Korean relationships are a very complicated situation. On one hand, their citizens would benefit from good relations with powerful countries like the US, but at the same time it will simply give more power to the North Korean government to continue their rule of oppression.

  25. I think that withdrawing visas will create issues between the two countries and that may be problematic

  26. I think the withdraw of the visa will cause issues and yes I think the blame will be put onto America

  29. I think that it makes sense that we withdrew the visas because of what happened with kim jong nam. I think that we will be pointed at for the death of him but also i think that the rest of the world and us should be alert at the fact that a weapon of mass destruction was used

  30. I think that the withdrawal does not make the U.S. look good. I think it may send a confusing message to the rest of the world as to what our intentions are, or how we go about things. The withdrawal of the tax and the visa issue coming so close with the assassination of kin-jung nam may look suspicious and could result in people looking towards the U.S. because of it.

  31. I believe that the withdrawal does not put the US in a good light. I believe that with that it sends an unclear message to the world about our desires and intentions. I believe that on the other hand that this is another way the US government is trying to focus on the US by not getting wrapped up in countries that may go to war soon.

  32. It makes us look like we do not want them in the country or it was just bad timing. No it was just bad timing again.

  33. Trumps last minute withdraw makes the US look weak. He cannot make a proper decision. Trump doesnt understand he can cause national wars with other counties and relations with North Korea dont look well.
