The Anti-trump Boycott of 70 Retailers Won't Back Down-Here's How it Could Affect Sales

http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-boycott-companies-will-it-work-2017-1

Across the country, Americans disturbed by Trump's rhetoric are boycotting companies that have business ties to him and his family. After Trump's win, Shannon Coulter, a brand and digital strategist who started the #GrabYourWallet hashtag in October 2016 and other anti-Trump twitter users made a google doc spreadsheet listing 32 retailers (such as Amazon, Bloomingdales, Bed Bath and Beyond, Century 21, Macy's Nordstrom, etc.) that have business ties with the Trump family-though that number has since grown to 70. Before Trump declared his candidacy, the overall added value for Trump's brand was 25%. This means if an apartment complex normally sold at $1,000 per square foot, it could sell for $1,250 per square foot with Trump's name on it. After Trump entered the race, his brand power decreased 20% for products like suits, ties, and jewelry, but increased fro branded items geared toward wealthier Americans, like country clubs and luxury condos. When the Washington Post leaked audio of Trump making lewd comments about women in October 2016, that percentage plunged to 8%. Economists have doubts about whether those tactics achieve that desired effect. P. Sergius Koku, an economist at Florida Atlantic University who has studied consumer boycotts, said the plan could have a "backlash effect" if consumers feel inconvenienced, or they may end up enraging customers or alienating potential supporters. However, a recent study from Northwestern University found that though major boycotts between 1990 and 2005 didn't significantly hurt sales, the bad publicity did damage company stock. Over a third of the targeted retailers also changed their procedures after they were protested.

1) Do you think boycotts really work?
2) Do boycotts damage the company's brand or impact the sales and the economy in general? How?
3) Do you think the boycotts on Trump's brand were effective and how?

  1. I think boycotts definitely can be effective because they affect both that company's brand and the economy in general. As you said, although the impact might not be as big, they still have the potential to damage their stock and make them change their procedures. However, I do think that the boycotts on his brand were effective, especially because they were able to reduce his brand power percentage in 2016.

  2. I agree with Haley; these boycotts are effective. While it's debatable if this action will bring any change, it's important that U.S. citizens implement their First Amendment rights.

  3. I believe that boycotts are effective because when one starts to boycott, others will as well and it will soon congregate as a large boycott with an increasing impact. They both impact the reputation, name, and sales of the brand, however, I do not know if it effects the economy as a whole. The boycotts were effective because they revealed a drop significant enough to report on it.

  4. i think boycotts are effective and they impact public opinion. Boycotts effect a company in a major way, but i don not believe that it would effect the economy.I believe the boycotts were effective.

  5. I think boycotts are effective because it gets people around them thinking about their opinion, which can sometimes end up in them joining the boycott. I think the reports on Trump's brand were effective because it revealed weaknesses and reduced his brand.

  6. I think boycotts only work if in the end it makes a difference. Like if you're boycotting something you should be doing it to have a good impact on a problem and so that it can change. But if it does make an impact then they are definitely effective

  7. I agree with Cem that boycotts will be beneficial for they impact companies, but not the economy.

  8. I believe that boycotting is effective in making a point and taking a stand against Trump, but at the same time can hurt consumers and supporters having an overall negative effect on the economy. We have to be ready to accept consequences if we decide to boycott and take action for what we believe is right.

  9. I think boycotting works to an extent. I think if the boycott really has an impact on a company or enterprise then it is effective and if it is a recurring event then it is will be even more effective. I think there is only an impact if the boycott is widespread.

  10. I agree with Emily because boycott should work to an extent. It has an impact on a company which will even be more effective when boycott is widespread.

  11. I think that boycotts can be effective in some way by the attention and the impact it can have on the company. It can hurt the supports with the negativity on the economy.

  12. I think boycotting can be effective, they impact companies and not the economy.

  13. I think that boycotting can definitely be effective if a large enough amount of people participate, they might not bring much change but they can create a dent in the stock and bring apart some sort of at least recognition from people who may choose to join. It brings opinions out and makes people think which is necessary right now

  14. Yes, to an extent they work. They only work when the people fighting are on the winning side and the company is willing to switch stuff up. Yes, they will impact their sales because it isolates a large majority of their consumers. Yes, I do believe they will work.

  16. I think that boycotts are definitely effective. However, I believe that they really only impact the company and not the economy as much. I believe that the Trump boycott did work, but it was just completely pointless.

  17. I think that boycotts actually work because they draw attention to issues that people are affected by. They will also impact public sales and the economy in general. I believe that the Trump boycott actually worked and was effective.

  18. There should be a more distinct separation between Trump an his former company. Donald Trump should be focused on issues of national interest, not personal interest.

  19. I agree with Julianna that Trump should be focused on national issues instead of personal ones. I also believe that boycotts are effective because they attract attention and help individuals express their opinions.

  20. I agree with the majority; Trump shouldn't be so worried about personal matters and instead spend his time more affectively and focus of national problems. I do think that boycotting (if it becomes a big enough deal) will attract enough attention to make a change. It can negatively impact a company's reputation if it gains enough negative attention.

  21. I believe boycotts work to an extent. With enough participants, it draws attention to the issues at hand. However, boycotting negatively affect the economy by giving companies a poor reputation and discouraging consumers. I think this could force change, but it may have consequences.

  22. I think boycotts work as long as there are many people who are boycotting. The boycotts spread awareness to people about any issues with the company and limit sales for the company.

  23. I think boycotts work very well at forcing change. This will definitely affect the economy and how Trump will behave hopefully.

  24. I believe that boycotts do help make a change because people are facing the change and they do not give up until they obtain what they want. Boycotts also cause for more people to be involved to make a change and it brings awareness to others. Boycott is good if it is positive not done negatively.

  25. I think that boycotts can be effective and in this case it was. Because of this boycott, the value of Trumps brand was lowered. Boycotts can damage the company and sales, and depending on how big the brand is, I think it is possible that it could impact the economy.

  26. Boycotts can be affective, they make a change as long as the people know what their boycotting for. They impact the reputation, name, and sales of the company. The boycotts were effective bc they revealed a drop significant enough to report on it.

  27. Boycotts have proven to be successful in the past, making some of the more iconic leaders stick with it. These boycotts have caused enough to make it stay constantly in the news around the nation which can eventually lead to actual change for these retail stores.

  28. I think that boycotts can be effective if there are enough people who participate and that they are persistent in sticking to their cause. They have been successful in the past in cases like the Montgomery Bus boycotts. I think that these boycotts on his businesses did turn out to be effective because there was a enough of a significant drop for it to be brought up in the news.

  29. I do believe that boycotts can be successful in a peaceful manner. The most famous boycott led by Martin Luther King Jr. in boycotting the bus was successful and peaceful at the same time

  30. I do believe that boycotts are effective. They impact a lot for a company, especially its stock and reputation. The more people join a boycott, the more of a disadvantage it will be for a company because they're given negative attention.

  31. I think boycotts are useful when there is a large number of supporters behind it.

  32. I feel like boycotts are an excellent way to protest against a company. This will lower its reputation as well as its business and this will get out a message to them.

  33. I think this will hurt the retails business and sales .its not the right thing to do at this time companies should work together for the benefit of the economy, so people keep their jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Im not really sure if boycotting helps, but I know it does hurt companies in a lot of ways. I think it would force the companies to stop supporting trump and his decisions.

  35. Boycotts will have a great benefit to the companies but not the economy

  36. I think boycotting is excellent protest. In the long run it may be more harmful then effective
