In the great Depression, a family being evicted would draw riot crowds, even though the number of evictions was a fraction of what is today. The rise in evictions has been caused by fluctuation of rent prices, due to a lack of rent control, to the point of companies being formed for the express purpose of efficiently carrying out evictions efficiently. Family incomes stay stagnant while housing costs skyrocket. Despite this, only a small portion of families who are eligible for housing assistance receive the aid they need and deserve. This results in many of America's poorer families living while spending the majority of their incomes on rent and power alone, food notwithstanding. Roughly 1,000,000 families get evicted each year, and in New York City it is reported that near 60 evictions occur per day. Most evictions occur without any connection to the condition of the rented space or the behavior of the tenant, relating only to the price of rent. It is wrong to evict a person solely due to an abrupt change in rent price.
Do you believe that there should be rent control?
Do you think that 24 hours is an inadequate amount of time for an eviction notice, and if so, what do you believe is a better amount of time?
What do you think is proper grounds for eviction?

I believe that there should be rent control, and I agree that evicting a tenant based only on their inability to pay the higher rent is absurd. Rent control would hopefully control the high evictions, and when there are evictions, there should be at least a week's notice for the tenant.
ReplyDeleteAs Caroline stated, I think that there should be at least some form of rent control. 24 hours is definitely not enough time for families to gather their belongings and find somewhere else to live. They should only be evicted on account of tenant behavior and so on, not their inability to pay.
ReplyDeleteI think that there should be rent control. These people should not be kicked out just because they cannot pay the increased rent. I think people should only be evicted for very serious reasons only.
ReplyDeleteI think that rent control is needed in places like New York City, San Francisco and LA. These cities need rent control between cost of living is already high and it is not fair for those people living there to have to suffer so much. I think a 24 hour notice is not enough time because people's whole lives are in their houses and 24 hours wouldn't be enough for me to pack my own room.
ReplyDeleteI think that people should be given more than 24 hours before an eviction notice because 24 hours is not enough time. I think that rent control should be implemented with specifics that help both buyers and sellers because rent control can often have the opposite effects and may negatively effect both buyers and sellers.
ReplyDeleteI believe rent control should exist all over the country. I think an eviction notice should be up to 5-7 days just because 24 hours is too little time. 5-7 days is enough time to get everything out of the house.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people should be given more than 24 hrs for an eviction notice. The rent control should come from buyers and sellers. There can always be good or bad outcomes so you may never know
ReplyDeleteI do believe that there should be rent control because families are being kicked out of their homes because they cant pay rent it's just too expensive. Proper grounds for eviction is if they arent paying rent, if they have to many complaints.
ReplyDeleteI believe that 24 hours is not enough time for an eviction notice. There should be rent control it is not fair for these people to get kicked out.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there should more time given than 24 hours for an eviction notice. I believe that rent control should be enforced all over the country.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we should have better rent control because those who are poor are unable to pay fro rent yet still need a home. Therefore if we were to have better control of rent we can keep people from losing their homes.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there should be rent control because they should be affordable to the people and not over blown just so the owners could make an excessive amount of money. I do not think 24 hours is enough to get all of their stuff out of the place and find a new living situation. I believe that proper grounds for eviction is not paying their rent on time more than three times consecutive or not complying with the rules that the owner has put in place.
ReplyDeleteI think that for places where the cost of living is so high there definitely should be rent control to make it more affordable (ie big cities/Bay area etc). I definitely don't think that 24 hours is enough time because that is no time to find a new place and move everything out, I think that around a week or two at least should be given

ReplyDeleteWhile I don't think that there should be rent control, I agree that 24 is too short of a eviction notice.
ReplyDeleteI feel that 24 hours in not an adequate amount of time for an eviction notice because it may take longer to remove all of your belongings from your home and I think that people should be given at least three days before they are kicked out.
ReplyDeleteI agree that 24 hours is not enough time for an eviction. I think something as serious as being evicted requires at least a couple days notice. I believe there should be rent control because in certain cities, rent it way too high and is not affordable to many.
ReplyDeleteIf there should be a rent control, setting a price ceiling, there would evidently be a shortage in supply. However, people with more earning may negotiate with the house renters in order to wangle good housing from the poorer families, allowing the same problem, in which that poorer families end up finding horrible living conditions, to occur again. Therefore, if there should be a rent control, then the government should also create a priority for the lower income families in order to fix the problem in the short run.
ReplyDeleteI agree with most people that there should be rent control and that families shouldn't be kicked out of their homes because land lords get greedy.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that 24 hours is enough notice for eviction. When evicted they are being asked to take all there belongings and find somewhere to stay in basically a day. I think at least a 10 day notice would be sufficient for people to find a safe residence and to take their belongs, this would be most helpful for those with families
