Trump seeks Mexican import tax to pay for border wall

President Donald Trump will seek a tax on goods imported from Mexico and use the revenue to build a border wall, the White House spokesman has said. The plan was announced just after the Mexican president cancelled a visit to Washington, amid a row sparked by the question of who will pay for the wall. But soon after revealing it, the White House said that was only one option. Mr Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to create a wall on the US southern border with Mexico. Making Mexico foot the bill (which Republicans say could be $12-15 billion dollars) was one of his key election campaign pledges. But President Enrique Pena Nieto has always insisted that will not happen and on Thursday he pulled out of next week's White House meeting. Hours later, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters the president had discussed the funding proposal with lawmakers, and it could be part of a tax reform package the US Congress is planning. He said that a 20% tax could generate approximately $10 billion in tax revenue per year. This is thought to be a good budget for the production of the wall.

1. Do you think it is fair to place a 20% tax on all Mexican imported goods?
2. Will this plan actually get approved and come into play?
3. What other plan could be made that would be more fair?

  1. This plan is just completely racist. He needs to face the fact that no one is going to pay for this wall.I personally don't think that this plan will come into effect

  2. Even if this 20% tax is placed, there is no way that it will be able to fund the wall because I dont think mexico will continue to trade with the US if everything is 20% more expensive.

  3. I do not think the 20% tax on all Mexican imported goods will be beneficial. I agree with Thomas that this tax will not fund the wall. In addition, the wall itself is a ridiculous plan. Keeping undocumented immigrants out will not help the US economy. If anything it will hurt the US.

  4. I think we could just secure the borders more by putting more patrol on all borders and just making security stricter all throughout America. I don't think Trump's plan will get approved because it is extremely radical and tax revenues will still not make enough money to pay for this plan.

  5. I disagree with the idea that he should put a tax on it. I agree with Emily that we could just make the security heavier.

  6. I do think that the wall is something hat is very extreme. Instead of putting all this effort in a wall just make sure we place more border patrol and security on the boarders. Building a huge wall shouldn't be something that is actually considered.

  7. I think that all import taxes have negative results for both parties, because if the US begins to start a 20% import tax on Mexican imports than Mexico will put an import tax on the US imports and so on and so forth.

  8. I don't think the wall should be built because will it may deter some illegal immigration, it won't stop everything. A 20% tax seems extreme. Because the Mexican President is against funding the wall, it is likely that he will boycott the tax anyways.

  9. I don't think this plan will go through and if it were to go through it would bring a lot of problems and nobody wants to solve them and this isn't fair at all.

  10. I do not think that a 20% tax on Mexican imported goods will not be beneficial. I do not think that this will get approved because it too extreme, and looks like it will do more harm than good. The wall is not likely to stop immigrants therefore going through with this plan would be a waste of a lot of money.

  11. I agree that instead of building a wall, we just focus more on securing the border but putting more security on it.

  13. I don't think putting a 20% tax is fair or a good thing to do. I hope this plan does not get approved as it would not only hurt Mexico, but the US and its economy as well. Another plan could be to not build the wall.

  14. We rely on Mexico for our produce and they are our 3rd largest goods trading partner. By burdening them with a 20% tax will only suggest we care very little of our relationship with them. Economically, it is an extremely bad tradeoff to say the least. Although his plan can be achieved very easily, it could break off a friendship that has been strengthened over the years.

  15. Boarder protection is a duel responsibility of Mexico and United States. United States has the rights to protect its boarders from people illegally crossing the boarder. That prevents illegal flow of drugs, arms, criminals, and possibly terrorists. Mexico is refusing to pay for the boarder protection because the flow is primarily in one direction. As a result US is hurt more by not having a boarder fence than Mexico. In my opinion it would be fare to split the cost of the wall construction between two countries. Mexico is doing very little to prevent the flow and therefor is not interested in safety and security of its neighbor to the North. In view of this I do not think that imposing a boarder tax will be beneficial to either country but there has to be a way to protect the boarder where both Mexico and US participate and share the cost.

  16. I mean to be honest Trump is just making a waste of money in building the wall. The cost should be slit up at least I say this because it was Trump's idea. Having a tax will not cause any benefits and Trump is being really dumb because he wants for Mexicans to be taxed, but he isn't president of Mexico therefore he should not plan things that he cannot make happen.

  17. This is a ridiculous plan it will not only hurt Mexico but horrible for our economy as well. I don't think this plan will even be approved because tax revenues will not make enough money to pay for this plan Trump has

  18. The plan is not fair at all whatsoever. If this plan does get approved, it would just prevent Mexico from doing trade with the US knowing that there is an increased tax rate.

  19. I do not think it's fair because if he wants to build the wall, he should pay for it. It's not fair for Mexico to have to pay for something that does not help them. Mexico could easily stop trade with the US. If trump wants to wall so bad, he should pay for it.

  20. It isn't a good idea to put such high tax on imported goods from Mexico because it will ultimately hurt the economy in the US. A large part of our produce and foods come from Mexico, and to put a strain on these imports would drive prices up for consumers and put distributors out of business.

  21. I do not believe that it is a good idea to put a high tax on imported goods from Mexico. In the end, it will only hurt the United States economy. I believe that Trump needs to get over this wall idea and start focusing on the issues that are a serous problem in our country, such as climate change.

  22. I believe that a raise on Mexican tax imported goods is a good idea because Mexicans have been illegally coming into America. It's only fair to raise the taxes to somewhat balance the illegal action that has been taking place with drugs and illegal immigration. If you think about, a raise on Mexican imported goods taxes, will help the economy grow through money given to the government. The government will put the money to good use.

  23. I don't see how the imported goods taxing does anything other than destroy the Mexican economy for no reason at all. If anything I'd like to see Mexican's strive without needing US assistance economically but we will have to see about that.

  24. I agree with Maira that no one will pay for the wall and he needs to accept that he can't get the wall built without destroying our economy or Mexico's economy.

  25. No the idea of this drastic tax is discrimitory and pointless. I do not think it will have enough support to become a serious topic in congress to become a law.

  26. Placing a tax on Mexican goods, will ultimately harm our economy. A majority of our produce, fruits, vegetables, come from Mexico. His attempts at getting Mexico to pay for the wall are pointless.

  27. No I don't think it's a good idea because we shouldn't build this wall.

  28. His ideas are crude and irrational. We shouldnt build the wall, if anything more bridges and gates/ school funding would be more useful.

  29. It is not fair to place a 20% tax on Mexican imported goods. I don't think that this plan will actually get through since majority of people do not approve of this. Not making the wall would be a better plan because the money used to build the wall is not useful.
