The federal minimum wage has remained unchanged since 2009, staying at $7.25 an hour. Many states are individually taking action to raise this pay in their own states. Many say that raising the minimum wage will improve the lot of the least-skilled workers. In contrast, some economists are concerned that by raising these prices, jobs could face slower creation rates and cuts due to business owners combating the higher labor costs. So far in 2017, 19 states have raised their minimum wages, but most raises were less and a dollar. These small raises have been linked to inflation rates. The raises will have the most effect in states where there is a high percentage of workers in low-wage jobs.
What do you believe are some of the good results that will come from a raise in the federal minimum wage?
What do you believe are some of the bad results that will come from a raise in the federal minimum wage?
In analyzing both of the advantages and downfalls of raising minimum wage, do you believe that the federal minimum wage should be raised?
I believe that the federal minimum wage should not make the mistake california made in increasing the minimum wage to 15$ per hour in a short period of time. The major flaw in trying to increase the minimum wage will most certainly mean that those same people who cry out for greater minimum wage jobs will be the same people who see their jobs lost or any future job lost due to the rapid spike. It's reality, but hard to take in. The benefits are obvious pay raises for those who can manage to retain their jobs from employers, but that proves to be it.
ReplyDeleteOf course, raising the minimum wage will provide more money for those who need it, especially for their families. While there's nothing wrong with merely raising it, raising the minimum wage too much in such a short amount of time will make many jobless. But overall, I think that the federal minimum wage should be raised, but it should be done gradually.
ReplyDeleteRaising the minimum wage is good for the people that need it, but in the long run it will increase the prices of goods that people are trying to buy. I think it should be raised to a certain point and then kept at a level, so the economy isn't ruined.
ReplyDeleteits a very good move so people can make more money and have a higher income to ease their living but the only downside is a higher cost of living also its like an equal results in both sides.
ReplyDeleteRaising the minimum wage is definitely good for people making a living purely based on minimum wage. However if you raise it to much then small businesses will start to go out of business and I feel like that wouldn't be good for the economy. I don't think the federal minimum wage should be raised to high due to the disadvantage that I previously stated.
ReplyDeleteI think raising the federal minimum wage will hurt a lot of businesses. By raising this price, businesses will not be able to buy materials for their products at a cheap price which allows them to sell products at an affordable price. I don't think it should be raised, but I do think minimum should be raised in states that need it to be raised. These places include states such as California or New York.
ReplyDeleteOverall a small increase to the minimum wage would benefit workers and not harm producers/consumers, because it would increase the spread of money and make so that low-wage workers could live on that wage
ReplyDeleteRaising the minimum wage would be great for those who are currently recieving a low income. But on the other side raising the minimum wage too much may cause some businesses to go out of business
ReplyDeleteGood results of raising the minimum wage is more people that earn more money. Some bad results of raising the minimum wage are employers hiring less people to afford paying the minimum wage. I think the federal minimum wage should stay the same.
ReplyDeleteI believe that increasing the minimum wage comes with a risk. Price of goods will go up, and it will be harder to find a job.
ReplyDeleteFederal minimum wage should be raised in proportion to the economy. Currently, $7.25 is too low for many areas. If it is raised, I think it needs to be raised progressively if the government decides to increase it by a significant amount. Raising it progressively will lower the impact of sudden inflation and it will allow businesses and others time to adapt to the changes.
ReplyDeleteWhat if we actually lowered the minimum wage and just made people suffer like that. Then what would we be, just Communist Taiwan per se. Obviously we want the kids to have more money in their pockets but we also don't want hobos around our inner cities living life as if we had a choice--third world country. So basically what we gotta do here is make the minimum wage increase over a really long period of time. So I'm talking about like increasing the wage 1 penny a year. That should be good enough to appease the people who want to raise the wage, appeasing the kids, while not actually making a real difference--classic politics per se.
ReplyDeleteI feel if the minimum wage is raised, more people will take their jobs more seriously since they are getting payed more
ReplyDeleteThere is news that next year the minimum wage would be raised to $15. However, with products getting more expensive I don't think this will help the people much.
ReplyDeleteI think we should raise the minimum wage because if states get to far ahead of others it would create state with more economical power than others. If states are slowly increasing their own minimum wage the federal government should do the same not as much but around the same rate.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the minimum wage needs to increase slowly to prevent any drastic changes to the work force and both producers and consumers. Some bad results of raising the wages would be higher costs for producers and having a detrimental effect on the creations of jobs.
ReplyDeleteI think the benefit of raising the minimum wage especially in the bay area is that people have higher chances of being able to afford housing. Right now the minimum wage can barely get you through.
ReplyDeleteI think that raising the federal minimum wage will make slight improvements but won't drastically change too much. Some bad effects of raising minimum wage will be that producers will lose money. This means higher prices for goods and possibly less jobs.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe much good will come from raising the minimum wage, because if you raise it, others will have their pay raised. Depending on the area, I believe, is the only important factor. Like i said prior the minimum wage should vary depending on the area that you are living in.
ReplyDeleteI think that raising the federal minimum wage would benefit many but it should not be done too quickly and should be done very gradually in order for the costs to not be too great on those that will be effected like businesses and small companies etc
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sofia that the minimum wage should be raised gradually.
ReplyDeleteI don't think raising the minimum wage is beneficial because in order to counter it, businesses will raise prices.
ReplyDeletei dont think minimum wage should be raised as there is the possibility of inflation.
ReplyDeleteI believe that minimum wage should be increased gradually. By changing the minimum wage in a short amount of time, this would cause inflation. By increasing minimum wage gradually over several years, this would allow the payments to catch up to the inflation. Also, by increasing minimum wage, this would provide lower income families with more money, prompting them to spend, thus stimulating the economy as well.
ReplyDeleteI do not think raising the minimum wage will be good for our economy, it could cause inflation for this country. Other businesses and companies can be infected by this.
ReplyDeletei think raising the minimum wage will be a good thing because a broke boy like me will be making bank.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nicholas Wen, I don't think the raise will make a change for long because businesses are only going to raise their own rates.
ReplyDeleteI think that raising the minimum wage will help a lot of people who are unskilled workers, but I think that it will also negatively affect the amount of jobs that are created. I don't think many small businesses will hire people because the minimum wage is so much higher now.
ReplyDeleteI believe that raising the minimum wage will not do anything productive, for if the minimum wage is raised then jobs will be harder to find and also it will not change anything.
ReplyDeleteI think people will hopefully have an easier time getting through hard times. When you look at it from another perspective it really doesn't make a difference because of how much it costs just to pay rent in areas like San Mateo and bigger cities. People will be making a little extra money here and there, but there is still the problem of housing costs. They should focus on both problems not just one and forget the other.
ReplyDeleteI do think that raising the minimum wage is something that is very positive as it will push people to get out there and work as the pay is higher. I do believe that with this increase people, will start working for large companies or chains of stores. As these are the companies that could afford to pay this higher minimum wage. Many smaller business, as previously stated can't afford to pay the extra few dollars. So in my opinion, people will be shied away from working at these places, as anyone would want more money for their time being sent working.
ReplyDeleteI think raising the minimum wage would make businesses not hire as many workers. It would make people more money ,but the costs of goods can go up which will counteract raising the minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteRaising the minimum wage would be a nice thing, but at the moment we cannot have a huge jump to a higher minimum wage. We should gradually raise it over time. Many small businesses would suffer if the minimum wage skyrocketed out of nowhere. Some people may even lose their jobs if small businesses cannot afford to pay all workers.
ReplyDeleteRaising the wage will help bring the poverty level down, but then again will pound it right back into the ground. I believe that inflation is a never ending thing, and the only way to really stay up with it is to raise minimum wage and help people pay for things.
ReplyDeleteI believe that raising the minimum wage would be very helpful, not only that but it would make people actually want to work and get that pay even though on the bad side they would have to fight for the job because higher pay means having a specific amount of worker.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should raise the minimum wage. While it may help some employees get more money, it can also prevent more jobs from being available. Raising the minimum won't fix the problem. We should offer more jobs instead
ReplyDeleteA good thing that comes from raising the minimum wage is that people that work minimum age jobs will be paid more. The bad thing about raising the minimum wage is that some small business will not be able to survive because they cannot afford to pay their workers that much, which could lead to less jobs. Because of these reasons, I do not think that the federal minimum wage should be raised.
ReplyDeleteThere are both positives and negatives to raising minimum wage. one positive, being that those people would get paid more. However, raising minimum wage can also be difficult for companies to deal with if it is raised so much in a short amount of time, and they may not be able to pay all of the workers, so some get payed off. I think that raising minimum wage is a good idea as long as it is raised in increments small enough that businesses can keep up.
ReplyDeleteI think that if we were to raise minimum wage, it should be at a steady rate and not all at once. If we implement a higher minimum wage right away, it could hurt our economy badly. If we steadily raise the minimum wage, we will be able to control how it will effect our economy while benefiting those working for minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that raising minimum wage has it's benefits and it's negatives. People will receive higher salaries to help their family and pay for basic necessities. On the other hand, if minimum wage raises too quickly, some smaller businesses may not be able to pay all of their workers. I think that minimum wage should be raised at a slow and steady pace rather than too rapidly.
ReplyDeleteI feel that a higher minimum wage would help the economy a little bit better, but it may also be a challenge for the poorer families because of the growing prices. I think minimum wage should be raised; with everything increasing in money, its harder for those to pay if they have minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteThe one benefit that I see from this is that more people will be more pumped to work because they will be getting payed more. I would say just inflation. I would say raise it because then that means more money for the people that work and need more money for everyday Americans that live paycheck by paycheck.
ReplyDeleteRaising the minimum wage would better help stabilize the governments economy. Raising it moderately and with careful super vision will help with inflation.
ReplyDeleteRaising the minimum wage is a good thing but at the same time businesses may not be able to afford this change so many could end up jobless
ReplyDeleteSome good results by raising the minimum wage would be that people would now offered to rent a house or apartment but I also think that everything is going to be expensive. They should raise it up but start slow
ReplyDeleteI believe that the raising the minimum wage would offer much more of a help but i feel like people would need to show how well they perform. The bad thing would be that prices would have to go up.
