Trump: What now for countries in the US-led TPP?

Trump’s first act of business as he promised previously, to pull the United States out of the trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). which covers 40% of the world’s economic output. 12 countries signed up to the TPP back in February 2016 and the agreement was negotiated with the former president Obama, the goal of the agreement was to deepen economic ties between the 12 countries (Japan,Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei,Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Chile ,Mexico and Peru) Trump was clear from the very beginning of the election and promised his voters that he is going to pull out US and he was against it. Even though Asia had enough time to prepare for Trump’s decision, but they still think it will affect everybody. Asia thinks that Trump’s decision will hurt everybody including USA. Obama said the agreement would boost U.S. exports and strengthen Washington’s relationships in the Asia pacific, Trump thinks the opposite saying it was a bad deal and we should get out of it as he did the first day he spent in the office.

  1. Do you think Trump did the right thing or no?
  2. Will this hurts U.S. economy and the exports trade?
  3. Who are the winners and the losers of Trump’s decision?

  1. I think it was a bad idea to pull the US out of this deal. I think if there are any ways we can have stronger healthier ties with other countries we should do it.

  2. I feel that leaving such a major economic trade deal is a very negative thing for all sides.

  3. Personally, I feel Obama's idea seems to be backed up with reason where Trumps decision is based off his general opinion. I believe Trumps position on this topic is that he wishes to make our own economy thrive before we make any other ties to other countries with lower economies.

  6. This TPP trade deal is absolutely horrible because Trump rejected it. Everything he does we have to hate. I'm really conflicted right now has a 100% long-term devotee to burnie sanders who also wanted to repeal the TPP but since the NY Times was all like this is awful and America is going to lose the game Ima have to say Trump did the wrong thing here. Once again the North Koreans win.

  7. I do not think Trump did the right thing by pulling out. Obama's decision to participate was reasonable and well researched, while Trump's decision seems rash and he did not weight the consequences well enough. Although I am not an expert on this program, I think the US economy will be damaged by this decision.

  8. I think that the two presidents but different weight on american jobs and economic ties. As both are important, a huge part of Trump's campaign was to bring outsourced jobs back to america. I think that a large part of the nation wants this as he was elected, so i think it was a pretty good move as he did keep his word.

  9. The TPP provides a more free economy and trading between the countries involved. It will get rid of a lot of tariffs, or significantly lower them so all the countries can compete with each other economically in certain industries. Unfortunately, Trump pulled out of it, and I think it was a poor choice, especially because there would be long term benefits to the economy..

  10. I don't believe that Trump should've pulled the US out of the TPP. All the benefits that would've came from US involvement in it outweigh the costs. Trump doesn't have much of a reason to be against it and pulling the US out, but he did it anyway, which I don't understand.

  11. I definitely agree with what has been said above. I don't support any of Trump's foreign policies because they're irrational, and this one is no different. The TTP is an important alliance and economic agreement that shouldn't be rejected by the U.S.

  12. I believe that leaving the partnership may have some consequences with relations between countries. Trump is trying to create a stronger American economy and apparently to him this is one way of doing it.

  13. I agree with Lee in the fact that leaving this partnership could end up bad.

  14. I think that Trump made the wrong decision to pull the US out of the TPP because the US loses economic ties with the other countries. This will definitely hurt the US economy and exports trade. Because of Trump's decision, both sides lose something.

  15. I think that leaving the partnership was mistake because it doesn't really look like he is trying to help our economy.

  16. I do not believe that by leaving the TPP, the US is "saved". It's more than likely that this decision would actually hurt the US's economy significantly and deteriorate the communication and trade between the US and Asia-Pacific.

  18. I do not think Trump did the right thing with pulling the US out of the TPP. This hurts the US's economy and will lose trade with other countries.

  20. I believe that this action that was taken was very poor decision because we will be losing our ties with other countries. We will begin to create barriers with countries that have been allies with us for many years. I hope that we will not lose our allies because of a businessman.

  22. economically, the TPP would have been a great idea. This means reduced or lesser tariffs on goods and the communication between these countries could have the potential to create an even bigger economy. It would have also meant less animal trafficking, a positive for the environment. However, generic drugs would be much harder to come by and it provides less incentive to protect the environment actually. Not to mention it would supersede financial regulations. And actually we wouldn't be weakening ties. Our relationship with these countries have been pretty fair and pulling out of this deal does not necessarily correlate to the strength of the relationship. Yes, the bill can strengthen ties, but at the same time, it was only created to work with other countries for economic purposes .

  23. I don't think Trump did the right thing. I think this will hurt the economy and export trades because the price of the imports are increasing. The low income people will lose in this situation because they won't be able to afford the increase of imports.

  24. I believe strongly that Donald Trump made a horrible decision to decline an economic deal. The world will be affected as 40% of the worlds economy basically relys on the TPP.

  25. I think that trump made a really bad decision which will negatively affect the economy and US trade with other countries.

  26. The TPP, as geth mentioned, is not the end all be all for international relations in terms of trade for the U.S. The more isolationist approach is a differing economic theory, one that places trust in the U.S. itself to put its own products and people at a trusted benefit to provide and purchase internal goods. The TPP was in correlation with many other nations and their needs, and they it only came about recently under Obama, so revoking it would not mean the end of our economy if we survived without it for our history beforehand.

  27. I believe that he is wrong and he knows it. Everybody is telling him that it is a bad idea but he thinks it will work out and proves everyone wrong but that is not how it works when there is facts behind it. We are the losers because trump is stupid.

  28. I believe Trump was extremely wrong in his actions to pull out of the deal. I believe it will have a negative impact on our economy.

  29. I think this is one of trump dumbest moves. Severing ties with other countries is the last thing we should be doing. Knowing trumps reckless guiding I strongly believe he going go through with his plan, then later regret it.

  30. I think that Trump is being unreasonable. I think that he will regret this decision later in his running of presidents.
