With 'Star Wars' land still two years away, Disney cues Marvel's Guardians
The Walt Disney Company wrote a check for more than $4 billion in 2009 to acquire Marvel Entertainment Inc. On May 27th, the new Guardians of the Galaxy- Mission: Breakout ride will open, which replaces the classic Tower of Terror ride at Disney's California Adventure Park. The ride opens right after the debut of the second movie of the franchise, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."
While the new ride is officially part of the park’s Hollywood Land. But Disney enthusiasts have been speculating that the new attraction might become the gateway to a Marvel expansion at California Adventure.
The founder of the fan site MiceChat.com noted that Disney owns a parking lot and other property behind the new Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, a perfect spot to build a second Marvel heroes ride, plus shops and eateries. However, a Disney spokesman refused to discuss fan-site theories about a major Marvel expansion except to say that “Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout will anchor a broader superhero presence that will grow over time at Disney California Adventure park.”
The "Guardians of the Galaxy" ride is still a drop-tower attraction, but instead of depicting a haunted 1930s-era Hollywood hotel based on the old “Twilight Zone” television show, the ride will represent the fortress of the Marvel character Taneleer Tivan (also known as the Collector) who has collected the Guardians and put them on display. In the ride, guests help an escaped Guardian, Rocket Raccoon, try to break out the other superheroes. During Tuesday’s preview, Disney representatives said the attraction would offer six different experiences so that riders would want to try it multiple times. Each version will be accompanied by a classic rock song from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The ride's line will let visitors see examples of the plants and creatures collected in the fortress, with about 220 movie props on display throughout the ride.
In addition to the tower overhaul, Disney plans to launch “Summer of Heroes” next month. The four-month celebration of superheroes will include dance parties, face-to-face meetings with costumed characters and a training initiative for young wannabe heroes.
The new Marvel superhero attractions will launch three months after Disney raised ticket prices between $2 for daily passes and $20 for multi-day tickets and annual passes. Disney fans decried the price hike, saying the Disney resort had offered few new attractions to justify the increase.

I think it is absolutely atrocious and I hate that they has taken such an iconic rise and threw it in the abyss of despair but at the same time it is also very exciting to see what Disney has to offer for us. I swear on everything if this ride is not worth it I am going to take out someone's scrotum on the spot. If I were the head of the marvel department I would wait for a little bit in order to how the ride is doing and then rack up the money to expand on more movies. I really do not care about the price rack because Disney is Disney and I love Disney so I would pay a few more bucks to get in to the happiest place on earth.
ReplyDeleteThe Tower of Terror is and has been iconic to Disneyland. But even though they're taking it out, I appreciate how they're making the new ride similar, with its drop-tower feature. If I were the head of Adventure Land, I'd go for the Marvel expansion, since many young kids, teenagers and even adults are into it these days. Thus why I understand their decision to go through with the price hike.
ReplyDeleteI feel that replacing an extremely iconic ride, one that has preformed extremely well with long lines almost whenever you go is a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteWowzers in mi trousers Natalie, terrific post. I believe this decision isn't very good because it's like replacing 2pac with Drake. Bad decision.
ReplyDeleteI think it will be interesting to see the new ride at the Disney park cause this means that the ride will be brand new, bringing up the stocks for Disney therefore more. Not only that but there have been rumors that this ride will actually be faster than Tower of Terror.
ReplyDeleteI do not think they should replace or change the ride because it is such an iconic one. It is definitely one of the most popular rides there and I think changing it will hurt the company.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Haley that The Tower of Terror has been a major landmark to Disneyland, however, the theme of it is outdated and not relevant to today's children. I would agree with the head of Adventure Land to change it to Guardians of the Galaxy. By appealing to young kids today, Disney will attract more costumers.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Tower of Terror is a Disney landmark that many people think of when they think of Disneyland and California Adventures. I don't think they should remove it because it is still extremely popular. A Marvel expansion might be a good idea because it is so popular amongst people of all ages.
ReplyDeleteI think its sad to see the original ride be altered, but will be something great to renovate to attract more visitors to the park. I believe that keeping the old elevator style type ride will maintain those who like the ride presently, and attract new customers who enjoy the movie Guardians of the Galaxy.
ReplyDeleteI think that its a smart idea to change the theme of the ride but I don't think that it will be that good of an idea to change it from Tower of Terror to the Guardian of the Galaxy theme because most people have known and go to California Adventure for the Tower of Terror ride and they will be sad to see it called something else.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree that changing the tower of terror was such a great idea. That was an original Disney ride but now it's gone. I would not make a major marvel expansion because of it's part of Disney Land and nothing more.
ReplyDeletegetting rid of the tower of terror was a bad idea because the tower of terror is such a classic ride that everyone loves. If i were the head of california adventure land i would have not made this decision.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that changing tower of terror was a good idea. Many people are used to the ride and come to Disneyland for the ride.
ReplyDeleteI think they should have kept the Tower of Terror. It was a ride that everyone enjoyed ,and it was a classic.
ReplyDeleteI think the Tower of Terror was an iconic attraction at Disneyland, and many people were disappointed with its removal. However, I think that since the new ride is similar to the Tower of Terror and is an improved version, I think that this will help attract tourists. I also agree with Haley and think that the inclusion of the Marvel expansion will appeal to people of all age groups, and this would increase ticket sales.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the replacement of the Tower of Terror is a bad thing. People will get used to it and later on be obsessed with it
ReplyDeleteI think replacing the Tower of Terror was a good idea. The people that have the most fun at amusement parks are usually kids, and I think that the Guardians of the Galaxy ride would appeal more to the kids. The Tower of Terror was definitely a classic ride, but people will not mind the new change.
ReplyDeleteI think that the price increase is fair, it makes sense that there be a slight increase for all the new rides and the repairs needed to maintain the park; The Tower of Terror is a definitely a classic ride but, as the park is meant for children and marketed towards them, I think that it makes sense that they bring a new change, while adults will miss it, the ride will still be there in general. I think that as Marvel becomes more popular and more noticed by kids it makes sense for there to be an expansion and it will be a good idea to keep it
ReplyDeleteGuradians of the Galaxy is pretty dope so yeah it'll be pretty cool to change the theme. I definitely would seeing that Marvel is the one hauling in the most money towards Disney right now, aside from Star Wars. The price hike is unfortunate but not very surprising.
ReplyDeleteIt's smart of the Disney parks to open updated rides that cater to movie-goers' new interests. These attractions, if done well enough, should bring an increased amount of guests into the park anyways, so I don't think a price hike is necessary.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the Tower of Terror is a very iconic ride in Disney parks. It is refreshing to know that they are trying to stay up to date with new movies coming out. I also feel that many although people will be upset about the loss of a classic ride, they will be happier knowing that the park is only going to be changing for the better.
ReplyDeleteIm going to be sad about the new ride, only because I've never been on Tower of Terror before. As a huge marvel fan, I would definitely expand the park and add more marvel themes. The price hike is sad, but it makes up for the construction and everything else.
ReplyDeleteI think building a new marvel expansion would be a great idea however I personally really like the tower of terror already so I would just prefer if they added rides rather than changing existing ones.
ReplyDeleteI feel that they should just expand to the park instead of replacing iconic rides that people enjoy. I feel that with the prices rising, there should be an increase in activities that can be done in the park.
ReplyDeleteI think that removing and old ride and putting an new one in place of it is a good way to save money and create a new attraction in comparison to expanding the property which would cost more
ReplyDeleteTower of Terror was always fun so it sucks they are changing it for Guardians of the Galaxy. Yeah they should have a marvel expansion, they just did add the star wars expansion at disneyland so a little more at California Adventures would be cool
ReplyDeleteI agree that the tower of terror is an iconic ride and having it removed is truly sad. But I suppose that now a days it's literally aall about the money. So, I guess it is a good thing that will raise their profits
ReplyDeleteI think that replacing it is a bad idea, because people are going to expect it to be even better, and it is going to be extremely difficult to top.
