The Spending Bill Was Supposed to Be Easy. Then Trump Intervened.

President Trump's spending priorities are clashing with Congress, which needs to agree on a spending bill by Friday with a government shutdown looming. At issue is spending on the border wall, which Congress will likely not include in the bill. President Trump also wants to reform health care and tax policy, but both of those reforms remain uncertain. His repeal and replace plan for the Affordable Care Act was withdrawn and lawmakers are calling for Trump to release his tax returns before making changes to income tax laws. Previous Presidents such as Andrew Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama had budget clashes with Congress, so this executive/legislative conflict over spending is not without precedent. The extent of this conflict, will likely depend on how stubborn President Trump is in his approach to Congress.

Discussion Questions:

1. Would you prioritize health care, tax reform, or the border wall if you had a vote on the Federal budget? Why?

2. Are there other budget areas that you believe should be prioritized on the national agenda? Hint, you'll have to do this for your project this week, so good to start thinking about this.

3. How should Trump and Congress resolve this budget dispute?

  1. I believe that in order to prioritize heathcare, a revamped system must be established first to then warrant spending on it. Pushing tax revenue, which is already included in paycheck medicaid payments, into a system that isn't function from either party would never work. I believe focusing on creating a new system and then even more so prioritizing preventative health measures in that system would invest in our future greatly.

  2. I would either prioritize health care or tax reform for the Federal budget, but definitely not the border wall. I still believe the idea of a physical border wall to separate the US from Mexico is ridiculous and also because Trump recently stated that he would have Mexico pay for it (even though he previously stated that they wouldn't.) In order to avoid a government shutdown, Trump needs to cooperate more with Congress and come to a compromise, starting with a clear plan for reforming the health care and tax reform system.

  3. I would prioritize health care because our system right now is pretty corrupted since many people are billed thousands or hundreds of dollars for simple things. Another area that should be prioritized should be our education field since there are many flaws in it.

  4. I would prioritize health care because there are so many people with no health care because they can't afford it, but they still need help. People have sick kids but can't take them to the doctors because they don't have health insurance. This is way more important.
