Trump's trade agenda: Just what are his priorities?

Trump places a heavy emphasis on trade and focused on trade partners such as Mexico and China. At the beginning of his presidency, he made the decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, while stating that the U.S. has been treated "unfairly" with Mexico "killing us on jobs and trade." Trump states his goal is to reverse the decline of manufacturing jobs available to Americans. Despite the language during his campaign, he held a summit with Xi JinPing last weekend, expecting the U.S. to have better access to China's market for services, and the 45% tariff on China that was discussed during his campaign was not mentioned. Trump moved back on campaign promises by stating that China is not a "currency manipulator." With Mexico, Trump discussed plans to encourage trade between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada by renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement. Trump states that this was "the worst trade deal the US has ever done," and it kills American jobs. Trump has threatened border taxes on car makers if they expand into Mexico. Many of Trumps plans involve "tweaking" in this renegotiation and changing policy to impose tariffs on imports and open up American exports to foreign nations. Concerns that have risen involve bypassing WTO rules and imposing new barriers, thus reducing the agency's credibility in the eyes of the rest of the world.

1. Why do you think Trump is straying from his original campaign promises and statements?

2. What impact do you think these actions will have on the U.S. economy in upcoming years?

3. How do you think these actions will impact foreign policy and future trade deals?

  1. I think Trump is straying away from his political positions because he had some radical ideas and now that real life is happening he has to do real president job things and that means being flexible to adapting in different situations such as now. Like just think about it the Great Wall of U.S isn't happening and the immigration bans are "lul" so yea he's doing the real stuff now per se.

  2. Many of his campaign promises he is leaving behind, or is unable to do because how radical they are. I thing anything involving trade with our major neighbours could be drasticly impacting

  3. I think that Trump is doing his best to keep him promises... but they were so outlandish that he is struggling with the fact that the president doesn't have absolute power.

  4. Although trump is trying to keep the promises he made during his campaign he is having trouble dealing with the fact that he will not be able to do everything he has told the people because they were so extreme.

  5. I think he is trying to keep his promises but is having some trouble doing so. I think this may cause some problems, but I hope it does not.

  6. I agree with what has been said above. Several of Trump's campaign promises were radically different than Clinton's, and extreme at that. Now that he's actually the president, he has to be more realistic (although, it's controversial whether he's doing this or not).

  7. I think that Trump is straying away from his promises because he may be starting to realize that his plans can't be implemented legally and will not be successful.

  8. I believe that as the reality and the facts set in trump is realizing there are certain things that need to be done regardless of his campaign promises.

  9. Trump certainly disappointed many Americans by reconsidering his campaign promises. For those who voted for him, they may feel as if Trump has cheated on them. For those who were in neutral or opposing positions during the election, they may feel a bit relieved.

  10. I believe that Trump is straying away from his campaign promises for now. For the people that voted for Trump based off of his campaign promises alone may fell upset. And for the people that did not care, or those who did not like his ideas may feel glad he is not so extreme.

  11. I believe that Trump straying away from his campaign promises is nothing surprising because most of his policies do not make sense and most politicians do not uphold everything they say.

  12. It is definitely clear that Trump has backtracked on most of his plans. Most of them were radical and bad to begin with, so it is good he has changed his agenda. However, now it is unclear what he actually is planning to do, so it is annoying people.

  13. I think that he starting to stray from his statements and promises that he made during the campaign because he started to realize how radical they were when he actually got into office

  14. I do think that Trump is losing track of all the things he promised through out all of his campaign

  15. I think Trump is staying away from his previous statements because he wants to leave a good impression while in office

  16. I think that Trump is straying away from his campaign promises because they were too extreme and he has realized that he is unable to implement them.

  17. Trump is straying from his original campaign promises and statements because they were ridiculous and were just said to get people on his side. Hopefully these actions will keep people employed and improve the U.S. economy. Hopefully international relations will not be damaged.

  18. I feel like trump is staying away from the campaign promises and he is just doing as he pleases this will have a huge effect on the US. Trump should be promoting businesses and stimulating the economy but instead is building a wall and wasting US resources as well as raising taxes which is useless

  19. I think Trump is not fulfilling his campaign promises because he is a lair. He only said what sounded good so he could get elected and then do whatever he wants not what the people want. I think relations will be damaged.

  20. Trump is straying away from his campaign promises because, like many presidents, some campaign promises are only made to get people on your side. This isn't the case for all promises made, but it is the case for some. His actions could damage relations with other countries. He could be stimulating the economy by promoting business but he is doing just the opposite.

  21. He seems to moving far away from his pre-election goals.

  22. I think that Trump is straying from his original polices because he is realizing that he isn't going to get anything passed. He hasn't been able to get most of his ideas passed like the biggest one of the repeal of Obamacare. He can't keep pushing his ideas when he knows they aren't going to get passed, it will just make him look bad.

  23. I think that Trump has slowly come to the realization that some of the stuff that he has said before can't really be done. I also think he is realizing the weight of the presidency. I think that we can't really be sure. Everyone is still slowly getting accustomed to Trump as President. Same goes with foreign policy and future trading.

  24. Trump has strayed away from his promises because he now knows that some of the things he promised are not able to be done. We can't be really sure about how the U.S. Economy will turn out the up coming year.

  25. I agree with Caner. Compared to his pre-election goals, he's doing this completely different than what people are expecting.

  26. I believe that Trump is slowly fading away from his promises because he might be realizing that his plan isn't going as smooth as he thought it was
