How Venezuela Stumbled to the Brink of Collapse
How Venezuela Stumbled to the Brink of Collapse
Venezuela used to be the wealthiest economy in Latin America, but GDP decreased 10% in 2016 and now its economy more closely resembles Syria's. With 700% inflation, approximately twice the rate of South Sudan (a borderline failed state), money has become nearly worthless. Citizens are hungry and black markets and violence have become the norm. When President Hugo Chavez died in 2013, he left the current President Nicolas Maduro a weak economy. With oil prices falling in 2014, Venezuela, the nation with the largest proven oil reserves in the world, faced economic disaster. Now President Maduro may seek a new Constitution to begin rebuilding Venezuelan society and their economy.
1. What are some things you think Venezuela could do to begin fixing their economy?
2. What happened under Hugo Chavez that you think led to these economic problems (can find this in the article)?
3. Should other nations in the Americas and globally help Venezuela and if so, how?

I think they should make use of their oil reserves to jump start their economy.
ReplyDeleteUse their oil to make them the wealthiest economy in Latin America.
ReplyDeleteI think that the more pressing matter for Venezuela is their inflation problem and they need to fix it. 700% inflation is ridiculous and that will make people not have the money to pay for basic necessities.
ReplyDeleteI think that if they found a way to use their oil to begin fixing their economy, that would be the most efficient way to do so.
ReplyDeleteI think that if Venezuela is able to use their oil reserves to their advantage this could help improve their economic problem because a lot of countries are willing to buy oil.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Julian and think that this is a good opportunity for Venezuela to boost its economy.
ReplyDeleteI dont think other nations should help because Im afraid that all that is happening to Venezuela will happen to the nation helping.
ReplyDeleteThey need to use their oil too help fix their economy. I also think that other countries should help out because innocent people are starving and dying over there.
ReplyDeleteThey need to use what they have to fix their economy. The lack of poor government is a real downside to the country. They should help if they're able to.
ReplyDeleteVenezuela can utilize their oil resources in order to help them with their crisis. Other countries can help out by possibly buying their oil.
ReplyDeleteI think that Venezuela needs to create more jobs and spend more on government, if they also could use their oil resources then they could make profit from that. However, if other countries could help Venezuela then that would probably help the country greatly
ReplyDeleteThe deep hole they have fallen in would bring the nations helping, and help raise their economy, they should market their oil reserves as Caner has stated.
ReplyDeleteOne way to stimulate the Venezuelan economy would be to outsource jobs to Venezuela. Wether these companies are American or of other origin, it would be helpful to create jobs so that people can begin accumulating money to rebuild their lives and eventually stimulate a rise in GDP
ReplyDeleteI think that other neighboring nations could help them with finding jobs and decreasing inflation but I don't think its a job for the US to help and fix every country in need.
ReplyDeletethis is a problem that has been faced several times in history, and has only been escaped when the government undergoes a full restart, from scratch. when inflation reaches this level of disaster, government intervention is needed
ReplyDeleteI think Venezuela needs to raise their GDP by selling more oil to help their economy.
ReplyDeleteI think Venezuela can fix their economy by putting more jobs. This would be a good start for their country and put more money towards government spending.
ReplyDeleteI think they can try to make for jobs more available and maybe they could get a loan and can help the economy by giving our more food and water so no one goes hungry. I think the world should be trying to help Venezuela.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that it is America's "responsibility" to help Venezuela though i do think the UN and other countries should do what they can to help the situation because in the meantime many people are suffering and even dying.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Caner that they should do it on their own to help their own economy
ReplyDeleteI think that Venezuela should do most of it on their own but with an economy that bad they may be needing some help from other countries along the way.
ReplyDeleteuse their oil to help their country
ReplyDeleteAs people have been saying I think that they should use their vast amounts of oil to jump start the economy. Oil is always in high demand so there will always be buyers for it. I think other countries need to figure out their own issues before they start medeling in Venezuela's
