Many big chain stores are beginning to struggle. It is predicted that JCPenney, Macy's and Kohl's sales and profits will fall. Although shares of Macy's and Kohl's have both dropped nearly 20% this year, they have not plunged as badly as JCPenney which dropped more than 30%. Because of these drop in sales, many retailers are closing stores including Macy's JCPenney, and Sears. Mall- based chains are struggling even more than these other big chain retailers. Wet Seal, Aeropostle, Pacific Sunwear, American Apparel, and The Limited have all filed for bankruptcy. The reason chain stores are losing sales is because of stores like Walmart or Amazon. Amazon and Walmart, which now owns many online stores, are thriving with their sales which rivals all the store based companies. Shares of Walmart are up more than 10% while Amazon's stocks have raised more than 25% this year.
1. What can struggling stores do to thrive?
2. Do you think online stores will always thrive more than store based companies?
3. Why are online companies succeeding so much more?
They can lower their prices, or do more advertising. I don't think online stores will thrive more than store based companies, because often times you don't find online stores just by surfing the internet. Online companies are succeeding more because people do not want to leave their homes to purchase goods, when they can just order them online and have it shipped to their feet.
ReplyDeleteOnline companies are succeeding so much more because it has become more convenient for people to but things online. Even though, I believe that the old fashioned way of shopping for clothes is better because then you can try on clothes before you actually buy them.
ReplyDeleteThese days online stores will always flourish a lot more. It is just more accessible these days, and not shipping is getting a ton faster. Amazon even has two hour shipping on a ton of their products already. Many struggling stores should start lowering prices.
ReplyDeleteonline prescence of anything is on the rise, so the future of in person retailers seems grim. stores should start focusing on the specific differences between them and online
ReplyDeleteI think online stores will continue to thrive in the future, especially with how everything is becoming more online-based. Everyone is becoming more tech-savvy and would rather go shopping online in their homes instead of having to physically go out to the malls.
ReplyDeleteRetail stores are dead. Shopping in Macy's used to be a fun experience, but now since the food and environmental conditions are horrible, nobody enjoys going outdoors for shopping anymore. They should be used instead for environmental protection and preservation. Online shopping is green, convenient, and it allows people to have access to a better and multifaceted marketplace.
ReplyDeleteI think that they could try to expand to the online market and sell more clothes online (Macy's does that already I know), I think that more advertising honestly would help them thrive more as well
ReplyDeleteI agree with Victor and think that retail stores are slowly dying. But I do think physical stores still have a decent amount of value for the people who need to see and feel things before they buy them
ReplyDeleteI think that as companies find easier and more efficient ways to purchase things online, these big chain stores will continue to struggle.
ReplyDeleteThe future of shopping really is online. Shopping online can be done *virtually* (get it?) anywhere that has an Internet connection, and people don't have to worry as much about a store running out of a product. Plus, the less interaction with other people, the better.
ReplyDeleteI agree that shopping has made the transition from a traditional store setting to online. By doing this, it is more convenient for companies and the consumers to buy and sell goods, and at the same time, they don't have to pay for facilities such as lighting, security, etc. People are ensured a stock of goods, and people don't have to interact directly with others, and this appeals to many. Online stores will succeed over regular stores, and to compete, the stores can either reduce their prices or match the online price; however, this would reduce profit.

ReplyDeleteI think to more people shop online because that is already the popular way to shop, than these chains will continue to struggle because not many people shop in stores anymore
ReplyDeleteI think as time passes by each time people buy more and more online due to it being more convenient. These stores do have an online page, but it seems like they still aren't creating as much profit so clearly they really can't do anything.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daniela because online shopping arising and people get satisfied for not having to go to the mall and look for their item. While it can just be delivered to their homes within days or weeks.
ReplyDeleteI believe that with the growing reliance on the internet, it is only a matter of time people stop going out to stores and have their items shipped to them at home.
ReplyDeleteWhat struggling stores could possibly do to thrive is maybe go more on the advertisements as well as more options online. Also I think putting up more items on sale could be a good way to improve sales for struggling business. I do thing that online based shopping will thrive more than store shopping for the sole reason that right now we live in the technology world and lot of people don't want to leave their house in order to go shopping. They could always shop online and it would easier for everyone. Online companies are succeeding much more because we are living in the technology era and more people would rather go shopping online rather than a store.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mitchel that struggling stores so advertise their business more. Online stores can help businesses thrive a lot since most of the younger generations use shopping online to purchase items. Plus, with online shopping, people all around the world have easy access to what you are selling
ReplyDeleteStruggling stores can try to do more online business and promote a way to get people to go inside of their stores. I think online stores are going to continue to grow.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that online stores will always thrive more than store based companies because it does take time to ship and it is not always guaranteed by a certain day. Online companies are succeeding more now because it is convenient.
ReplyDeleteI think online companies are thriving because as they grow, they can set up more warehouses around the country. Take Amazon for example, they have so many warehouses that they can promise 2 day shipping anywhere in the US, and even 1 hour shipping in some places. The convenience and low prices make online shopping so much more appealing to consumers.
ReplyDeleteThere's only so much room in the retail market for various sellers, so the online and in store providers have to split the base of consumers. If online companies are taking more and more business, the other stores will naturally see a decrease in business.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that physical stores are going to go away any time soon. There is just too much that can go wrong with online stores in relation to sizing and products not being what is expected.
ReplyDeleteI do not think online stores will always thrive store based companies.
ReplyDeleteI think struggling stores need to buy smaller spaces, hire less workers, and have more reasonable sales. I think they also need to get into online retail because that is becoming more and more popular with lazy people these days.
ReplyDeleteI think there should be less online stores if they want their actual store to do good because everyone uses the internet these days and the online stores are taking over. Also, these retail stores need more reasonable prices that people are willing to pay for.
ReplyDeleteI think that one of the main problems of actual stores struggling is the online shopping world. Due to all of the amazing options online, many people will not want to buy from a store that does not have exactly what they want. It will always be a battle between online and real stores and I think that online stores may eventually beat real stores due to the efficiency of it.
ReplyDeleteNot only due to online shopping, I think there is more shopping emphasis on smaller local businesses. I don't know the overall trend of these sales, but I also think that as an effect on big name brands not doing as well.
ReplyDeleteI think that online stores are starting to succeed more because people are shopping online more because it's easier than going to the stores or the stores might not have what they are looking for.
ReplyDeleteI think online stores are thriving because of their low prices. Even if its a couple of cents. People will will want to save those $.05. It is also so much easier. People don't have to actually leave their house to buy things. It'll show up right at their doorstep.
ReplyDeleteOnline stores are becoming popular or have been popular for awhile now because people going stores do not always have what they need or want so they go to online stores to find them and online it is more likely to be found then in your local stores or mall
ReplyDeleteI believe that the struggling store should attempt to have a wider variety of clothes in order to compete with online shopping. When stores don't have what someone wants, they can easily go online and find it somewhere else. I also believe that the stores should use online shopping as a way for people to see what they have to offer, but have more options on site, rather than online.
ReplyDeleteStruggling stores need to make sure that they are online. Nowadays, online shopping is everything. It is convenient and it is easy. Amazon is clearly their biggest competitor but retail stores need to ensure that they incorporate the internet into their business.
ReplyDeleteTo save this these stores can push to thrive off of online business because that is becoming more popular as we move further into technology advancements.
