From Donald Trump to Sheryl Sandberg: what they want graduates to know about success

Donald Trump told graduates at Liberty University that "The future belongs to the dreamers, not the critics."

Will Ferrell told graduates at the University of Southern California that "You're never not afraid. I'm still afraid. I was afraid to write this speech."

Elizabeth Warren told graduates at the University of Massachusetts "If elected officials don't hear from people like you then the policies they set will be by the people they do hear from."

Sheryl Sandberg told Virginia Tech graduates "Speak up when you see injustice. Lend your time and your passion to the causes that matter."\

Arnold Schwarzenegger told University of Houston graduates "None of us can make it alone. None of us. Not even the guy that is talking to you right now that is the greatest body builder of all time."

Howard Schultz told Arizona State University graduates "Your generation will transform our economy and create millions of jobs. You will develop cleaner energy. You will make it so racism only exists in history books."

1. Which of these leaders messages do you hope to apply to your own future?
2. How can we use what they suggest to help us in college and career after Aragon?
3. What goals can you set for yourself based on one or more of these leaders' suggestions?

  1. I hope to apply Will Ferrell's message "you're never not afraid" to my own future. To me, being afraid happens whenever I try new things. I will experiment, take on adventures, and be a bold and original creator.

  2. I hope to use "If elected officials don't hear from people like you then the policies they set will be by the people they do hear from." to not be afraid to voice my opinions and contribute to the governing of my country and future.

  3. Arnold Schwarzenegger's message, "None of us can make it alone," is a really important one for me. I often do things independently, and I need to remind myself that I actually have supportive friends who I can depend on when stuff gets too hard for me to handle by myself.

  7. I agree with the second quote about fear. In my experience, I think that being scared of something is the greatest indicator that it is worth doing. You are never going to get anywhere if you always stay in your comfort zone, so learning from fear is the best way to grow character.

  11. I hope to apply the quote by Will Ferrell to my future. I think many people stop themselves from doing so many things and experiencing so much due to their fear. They let the fear almost dictate their lives. I hope to not let something stop me from achieeving my goals because I'm too scared.

  14. Donald Trump' comments, even with all of the negative feeds coming in about him, have dictated his rise to great success that many of us, whether we want to admit it or not, strive to achieve, and his comments are possibly the most useful. Being a critic on standby, looking for each point to knock down and destroy, will only see others move on while they stand in their own negativity. When you have a dream, you will know it. Nothing else matters when you are striving for it, and there is not time to critique others because that means you are too inept to focus on what you should be doing and not what others are doing. It's a powerful message and one I believe can be put to use in my life.

  17. i think the quote, "If elected officials don't hear from people like you then the policies they set will be by the people they do hear from" speaks volumes about people in our society not changing or speaking up for what they believe in and being complacent.

  18. I really like Will Ferrell's quote on always being afraid. This will help reassure me when going off to college and my future in general because I'm afraid but I know that I'm not the only one. Hopefully I can become more confident in myself in order to pursue my future easily and without worries.

  19. I liked Will Ferrell's quote the most. It reminds us that fear is something we're going to experience through our lifetime and it's not uncommon. You just have to remember to not let fear drive your behavior and let it encourage you instead

  20. I agree with Donald Trump's quote. Although I do not necessarily agree with his policies, I believe in his quote "The future belongs to the dreamers, not the critics." People are often criticized into silence, and although constructive criticism is helpful, many people criticize to put down others. By limiting yourself, you cannot achieve all that you dream of, and I relate this to "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take." Those who are innovative create things that people could only imagine and make them a reality. As a person going into a STEM career, I know to keep my mind open and the possibilities are endless.

  21. ¨None of us can make it alone..¨ is something I apply to my journey for I would not be here without the leadership of others and their support. Having young parents, they have struggled and sacrificed everything just so that I am where I am today.

  22. I think Elizabeth Warren's word are very important because they reflect reality. If an individual only thinks an idea, it will not become reality unless it is voiced and made known. I believe sharing your opinion is the most important thing to do because it is the basic foundation for developing your ideas and making them part of everyone's reality.

  24. Howard Schultz is pretty inspiring and I hope that those words will come true some day. the way this will help us is if we are ever in hard times or struggling at a paper that we think we can't do or studying for a test that takes a lot of studying then we can just look back at these and say that we gotta fulfill those promises and to push our selves through it so we can get there.

  30. Will Ferrels quote makes sense to me in that we will always be facing challenges in our world. At tines well feel like we can do anything, but when a real challenge comes to fruition one may be afraid or hesitant to attack it.

  31. I think that Sandberg and Warren has great messages about how we need to use our voices in order to enact the change we wish to see. I think these words are important to me because I want to be someone who does something to change the world, not someone who just complains.

  33. I hope to apply all of these messages in one way or another in my life. It may sound cheesy but they all found success in their own way and I believe that everyone finds success in their own way. However, that doesn't mean we can't learn from others in order to find your own path. I will just cherry pick from these pieces of advice when they apply to me.

  34. every message here has something applicable to everyone. they show that no matter who you are or how famous you get, youre still human, and the nature of people doesnt change, so dont give up on dreams

  35. All of the messages here can almost apply to everyone. The basic message is that we are all human and it is up to how hard you wish to work is how far you can get.

  36. I agree with Tommy that we all have what it takes to be successful its just a matter of finding the drive to do it

  37. I hope to keep what Will Ferrell said in my mind. The fact is that life is always going to be scary and it is up to you to conquer the fear and give life your best shot. A goal that I can set is to make sure to be part of the generation that betters everything and anything about this country.

  38. I think everyone can have success it just depends on how much you want it and what you are willing to do to get it.

  39. i hope to take on; Speak up when you see injustice. theres always going to be injustice everywhere but knowing that you spoke on it rather than being quiet is important

  40. The quote I like was the one about my generation being the one to make greater economic changes for the better and to make racism exist only in history textbooks. I would like to believe that people are growing to become more open minded.

  41. I would honestly use all of them. I find that each speech touches upon different aspects of success and how you can achieve it. I think that we should use it in our everyday lives when it comes to college and Aragon. I think one of the goals would be to just be more proactive and make sure you are out getting what you want because it isn't just going to be handed to you.

  42. I would most definitely take on Will Ferrell's quote in the future. we are all afraid. "You're never not afraid. I'm still afraid. I was afraid to write this speech."
