Without Immigrants, U.S. Workforces Would Shrink Dramatically Over Next 20 Years

In the United States, Immigration has been a highly debated topic. However, this article states that with the drop in baby boomers working and immigrants either retiring or leaving, the workforce population is predicted to drop from 173.2 million to 165.6 million within 20 years. The number of people in the working population who are U.S. citizens with parents who were also born here is deteriorating. Although the decline in baby boomers and older immigrants is happening, the offset of new immigrants and eligible U.S. workers is still not enough to continue the growth of the workforce population. The article also states that in this time, immigrants are the very thing that will help our economy with the loss of so many US citizens eligible for work. According to a senior demographer at Pew Research Center, Jeffery Passel, the growth rate of working-age adults is the slowest it has been in 30 years.

Questions:

1) Do you believe that the decline in baby boomers working will have an extreme impact on the economy?

2) Do you think that the strict laws Trump intends to impose on immigration will hurt the United States economy?

3) Being that the age for working adults is around 25-65 now, do you think the drop in the workforce population will extend the age that people work until?

  1. The decline in the number of baby boomers working as well as Trump's intended immigration laws will hurt the economy for sure. But hopefully they won't have to extend the age that people work until. A better solution would be to not go through with Trump's strict immigration laws and find another way to deal with immigration in the US.

  2. An overall decline in the workforce due to the drop in baby boomers and stricter immigration policy enacted by the Trump administration may lower competition for low-income families seeking jobs. As a result of having less unskilled workers, companies may choose to give workers better pay or invest in technology as substitution.

  3. I think there will not be a drastic change. Yes, there will be a little change, but as our world changes, technology has been evolving. There will be new technology to replace these jobs if there is really that big of a problem.

  4. I think that there will be a significant change and along with the immigration laws that might happen this very well could hurt our economy but i dont think it will be an extreme change. I think that people will work for longer because of this yes. I agree with Haley, it would be better to find another solution around what Trump's laws propose

  5. I think that there will be a change, but I don't think this change will be completely damaging for the economy.

  6. I think with the baby boomers retiring, it will free up a lot of jobs and allow younger people to take their jobs because right now a lot of them are beginning to retire. I think the strict enforcement on immigration will impact the economy and will hurt us because a lot of immigrants are just as hard working if not harder workers than other Americans.

  7. I believe that the decline in baby boomers working will have an impact on the economy with the change. This will cause more people to find more jobs. I think that this could cause people to work until an older age.

  8. I think the decline in baby boomers would have an impact on the economy. I also think that these strict laws on immigration will hurt the U.S economically and socially. I think the drop in the workplace population will extend to the age that people work until.

  9. I believe that the decline in baby boomers would have a pretty big impact on the economy. I will make a lot of new jobs for people. These new immigration laws will affect the economy negatively.

  12. I do believe that the decline in baby boomers will result in an extreme impact on the economy. With less people working in the US there will be consequences and one consequences will be the economy. As of right now the economy has been steadily going up while Trump has been president, but as time goes on and more immigrants start getting deported the economy may either stay where it is right now, go down or even go up, but as of right now it seems like the economy is going up. No I don't think the drop in the workforce population will extend the age that people work until.

  13. This is very ironic: Trump, who was elected to "make America great again" economically, is actually doing the exact opposite with his socio-political stance on immigrants. In some twisted way, immigrants are getting the last laugh. As the musical "Hamilton" puts it - "Immigrants: we get the job done." Trump really needs to change his anti-immigration thoughts, not only to create a safer America, but also to keep his promise to reform the country's economy.

  14. I think the strict laws Trump is planning on implementing will hurt the economy since it is drastic. However, I don't think that the decline in baby boomers working will have an extreme impact on the economy

  15. I believe the decline in baby boomers and Trump's immigration policy will have a negative impact on the economy. However, the retiring of the baby boomers also allows the younger generation to take on jobs, and this frees up work opportunities. I also agree with Victor that there would be less competition for lower income jobs.

  16. I think the decline in baby boomers will effect the economy and the strict immigration laws that trump is imposing will hurt the economy because higher wages will have to be paid to us citizens and prices of things will go up.

  17. immigrants are a very important part of the united states ,they build themselves and keep giving back to the united states. the diversity is making our country great and if the strict laws took place ,things will not work for the benefits of the economy.

  18. I believe that laws on immigration are not only going to hurt the economy, but they'll hurt the U.S.'s relationship with other countries. I think that the age of working adults might expand so that people work for longer amounts of time and cover the work that the lack of workers is causing.

  19. I think that limitations and restrictions on immigration will hurt our economy. Additionally, it ill affect the diversity of our country, and it can negatively affect us socially, in terms of relations with other countries.

  20. I think that the decline in baby boomers working will have an impact on the economy, and although it will free up jobs for those who are starting to enter the workforce we don't know for sure it that will make up for it. I think that the strict laws that Trump is implementing on immigration will also make a negative impact on the economy.

  21. I agree that the baby boom decline and Trump's strict immigration laws will affect the economy. If there's going to be less people entering the work force, companies and businesses will need their employees for longer which will extend the working age. Most of the people in America's work force are comprised of immigrants, and with the laws that Trump intends to impose, it gives them a lower chance of being able of finding a stable job to provide for themselves and/or family.

  22. I feel like strict restrictions on immigration might hurt us economically, and diplomatically.

  23. I believe that we should be making Trump's immigration laws a little less strict. Hopefully we will not have to raise that working age as well. However, this will affect the economy no doubt.

  24. If the population/influx of immigrants decreases, there should be job opportunities opened up. It is partially the responsibility of the government and partially the responsibility of American individuals to fill those jobs. People have to become motivated to work, because there are lots of people within the working age who do not partake in the workforce. Boosting the economy requires full participation, otherwise the ban on immigrants will be counterproductive in some ways.

  25. With the baby boomers now coming to retirement, a lot of jobs will free up. Now, with trump's immigration laws being put in, the loss of the baby boomers may actually hurt the economy more than it should. A better solution would be to not go through with Trump's strict immigration laws and find another way to deal with immigration in the US.

  26. I think that the economy will definitely hurt. I do think that the immigration laws will definitely hurt the economy due to the fact that immigrants are a large percentage of our work force. I don't think it will however I do think that businesses will be in trouble due to there being a shortage in workers.

  27. Im not surprised, immigrants has actually helped stabilize the economy by continuing the physical bater of trade with money

  28. I think that there will be a change, there may be slight change but not big and make a impact that would hurt the economy greatly

  29. I think the demographics of the work force are soon to change because the baby boomers are slowly starting to retire. Because of that, more jobs will be available.

  30. I agree with Jen Horita because it'll cause an impact within the the economy.

  31. I believe that the decrease in manual labor will force many places that had relied on it to use technology to make up for the lessened workforce, I don't think that the baby boomers retiring will have an extreme impact on the economy as people are constantly retiring. I think the age range of workers may expand slightly but will not have any dramatic changes.

  32. Personally, the strict laws that Trump intends to impose will hurt the economy in the U.S. because half the immigrants work and are making a difference in the economy and without them it's just going to plummet.
