J.C. Penney lists the 138 stores it is planning to shutter

Like many other retailers, J.C. Penney is closing down stores because more people are online shopping instead of going to stores and buying their clothes there. Around 5,000 jobs will be lost while J.C. Penney currently employs 105,000 people. Nine stores will close in Texas, eight will close in Minnesota and more stores will close in other states as well. 900 J.C. Penney stores left after the closing down the 138 stores.

1) Because other retailers are also following J.C. Penney's path, do you think this could hurt employment in America?
2) Do you think online shoppers think about how them not visiting stores affects the jobs of others?
3) How may retailers get people to continue to visit stores instead of just online shopping?

  1. I do think this will cause a higher amount of unemployment in the US, it is so easy for people to buy things online, they are not thinking of how that effects the people who work for that company.

  2. This will definitely hurt the employment rate in America because a lot of people work in retail. Online shoppers probably don't think too much about the effects of shopping online rather than in store because to them, they're doing the same thing regardless of whether they're doing it on a computer or in person. They could encourage people to come to their stores instead of online by promoting certain deals and items that you can only get in-store.

  3. I do believe that if other retailers follow behind J.C. Penney's example then it could hurt unemployment in the US. I do not believe that people online are thinking about the affects of not visiting the store are. One way stores could get people to visit the stores more is to offer in store purchase only rewards.

  4. This will definitely hurt the employment rate in America. I am an online shopper and I don't think about how me not coming in hurts their store. I don't think these people stop and think about how online shopping makes stores go out of business.

  6. I think by JC Penney closing stores it significantly hurts the unemployment rates. Although some 5,000 jobs, I'm sure by starting to focus on online sales, that could also open up job oppurtunities as well. Stores need workers for online orders too.

  7. Online shopping is only going to get more popular, and as the industry gets stronger there will be less necessity for stores. While this will make store employees lose their jobs, more warehouses and shipping areas will have to be opened up because those are needed for online shopping.

  8. While online shopping has increased in popularity, stores might offer better deals than what's offered online in order to get more people to visit stores IRL. Although, I don't see what the problem is, because as stores close down, warehouses and shipping areas open up. So while there is a decrease in employees, there will be an increase as well. Thus, I think it evens out.

  9. I do think this will hurt employment in America because if other stores do the same, many people will be out of a job. I don't think online shoppers think about how not visiting the store hurts other people because I don't think they realize that it does. I think people online shop because it's easier for them since they don't have to g to a actual store, but don't realize that that has a negative effect on others. Hopefully by making people more aware of what online shopping does to employers, people will be more sympathetic to the employees who could potentially lose their jobs.

  10. People tend to lean towards online shopping because of the variety it provides along with the convenience of it. Also, prices online tend to be cheaper since they don't have to deal with the costs of running the physical store itself. This definitely increases unemployment in retail businesses, and people who shop online may be unaware of the negative impact it has on the stores. One way to attract customers is to match online prices or provide special in-stores deals in order to attract customers.

  11. I believe the JCPenny shutting down will effect the unemployment rate. It will create a negative impact to the businesses and people who shops online.

  12. I think JC penny closing down will effect unemployment rates because so many people will have lost their jobs. I do think online shoppers know how it effects the store, but so many people don't have time to physically go shop for anything they need.

  13. JCpenny shutting down will effect the unemployment rate with the 9 stores shutting down. I dont think people know how it can effect actual in store business when shopping online.

  14. I don't think that people consider the negative effects of online shopping when they are purchasing. One way that physical stores can try and increase amount of customers is by making the environment welcoming and easy that way people don't feel stressed or pressured when shopping and it can overall be an enjoyable experience.
